Abstract

We worked with commercial vendors to document three “extended lifetime” (EL) commercial models for scientific computing equipment that are available today. We analyzed these models using a case study, and the results show that extended lifetime options can achieve 36-90% superior cost efficiencies compared purchasing and deploying new equipment. This large economic incentive suggests every effort should be made to encourage governments and universities to utilize extended lifetime models to grow their computing resources cost-effectively; and as a complement to the addition of new equipment.
